Game of Thrones scenes in Cordoba

Córdoba appears in Game of Thrones with two locations: one in the city centre and another 24 kilometres away.

Both take place on the same day, and one of them is free.

The Roman Bridge: Volantis

Appears in the fifth series, in the scene where Tyrion Lannister and Varys cross Volantis On the road to Meereen, they come across the Red Priestess preaching to the crowd.

What you see on screen is the actual bridge with the buildings of the fictional city added by computer: the skyline and the arches are from Córdoba, but the houses and towers are not.

How to watch it just like in the series:

• It’s free and pedestrianised. There is no admission fee and no set opening hours.
• The frame is on the south bank, next to the Calahorra Tower. From there, you can see the whole bridge with the Mosque in the background.
• Go first thing in the morning or at sunset. That’s when there are fewer people around, just like when it was filmed.

The bridge dates from Roman times, around the 1st century BC, and spans the Guadalquivir, linking the Mosque district with La Calahorra.

Almodóvar del Río Castle: Altojardín

In the seventh series, it’s Highgarden, the headquarters of the House Tyrell, and the scene of the Lannister army’s assault on Lady Olenna. Panoramic views of the castle on the hill and the crenellated walls were used.

⚠️ Don’t confuse it with the Almodóvar Gate

They are two different things and are constantly confused with one another. The Almodóvar Gate is within Córdoba, on the wall of the Jewish Quarter. The The castle is in another municipality, 24 kilometres away.

What you need to know before you go

• 24 kilometres from Córdoba, on the hill of El Redondo, on the left bank of the Guadalquivir.
• It has opening hours and a ticket office, centred on 10 € General information. Check it before you go.
• Set aside a couple of hours for the visit, plus travel expenses.
• There are themed tours on his role in the series.

And a word of warning about what you’re watching

The castle dates from the Umayyad period, from the year 760, built on the site of an earlier Roman fort. Its Arabic name was Hisn al-Mudawwar, «the round castle», where Almodóvar comes from.

But what we see today is largely a 20th-century reconstruction. Among 1901 and 1936, the 12th Earl of Torralva He had it thoroughly restored with the architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova. That explains why he’s in such good shape: It didn’t arrive like that; it was redone.

Its medieval history is certainly significant: was the residence of Peter I and Henry II of Castile in the 14th century, and served as both royal treasure as well as prison. The main towers are the Squarethe Round and the of the Tribute.

It is also known as Castillo de la Floresta.

3. An Afternoon with Almodóvar: half an hour’s drive and a couple of hours’ visit.

It works less well the other way round, because the city centre of Córdoba is best enjoyed in the morning and the castle closes earlier.

The Mosque doesn’t appear in the series

It is worth clarifying this because many people take it for granted: the Mosque-Cathedral does not appear in any chapter from *Game of Thrones*, despite being the city’s most recognisable landmark.

And there is an underlying reason: Filming inside a place of worship that is still in active use – and which has been a World Heritage Site since 1984 – is subject to restrictions that do not apply to a private castle.
