The Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre of Malaga

The Roman Theatre of Malaga is an important archaeological site dating back to the 1st century A.D.. For centuries it was hidden under dwellings that were located on the slopes of the Alcazaba, however, was discovered in 1951 during construction work and has since been the subject of numerous excavations and restorations for its recovery.

In the past, the theatre could seat around 2,000 spectators and was used for theatrical, musical and entertainment performances. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the theatre was abandoned and its ruins were buried and used for other purposes, such as the cultivation of orchards.
