The Origin of the Chinitas Passage

Passage chinitas

Pasaje Chinitas owes its name to Antonio María Álvarez, businessman and former civil and military governor of Málaga, who had it built on the grounds of the former Convent of the Augustinian Nuns, founded in 1628. It was in this passage that the famous Café Chinitaswhich later became a cultural emblem with a history of its own.

This café was immortalised by the poet Federico García Lorca in his verses of the poem dedicated to the bullfighter Paquiro, making this passage a special place, full of duende and Andalusian essence.

The cross-shaped layout of the passageway evokes its construction on ground considered sacred. However, the name "Chinitas" comes from the nickname of Gabriel Guerraa well-known dramatic actor of the time, who gained notoriety in this very place.

In the mid-19th century, the Café Chinitas was transformed into a temple of flamenco singing, where legendary flamenco artists such as Juan Breva, Antonio Chacón, La Niña de los Peines and dancers such as La Juana left their mark.

Finally, the café closed its doors in 1937The legacy of the museum is still present in the history and culture of Malaga.

Today, this passage maintains a unique essence, with small bars and shops that invite you into a traditional and authentic Malaga.
