It is a fortress of Arab origin, built in the 10th century on the orders of Abd-ar-Rahman III, on a hill 38 metres above sea level next to the mouth of the River Fuengirola, with walls and towers that are still standing today. From the top, you can see the coastline and the harbour.

Throughout the year, the site hosts the Medieval Market, the Beer Festival and the Marenostrum concert festival. The menu is rounded off with Andalusian classics such as gazpacho and, for dessert, rice pudding.

In the old town you’ll find more traditional tapas bars, and if you want to sample a variety of cuisines in one place, there’s the La Galeria Market, the city’s first food market. It runs right alongside the sea, over wooden walkways and sections of the promenade, and can be explored on foot or by bike.

The full route covers around 200 kilometres along the entire coast of Málaga, from Maro to Manilva, and along the way you’ll come across watchtowers, Phoenician archaeological sites and protected areas such as the Artola dunes. It is signposted and suitable for all fitness levels, so you can choose to walk just the section that interests you: it’s the easiest way to get between beaches without taking the car.

How to get to Fuengirola

Fuengirola is about 30 km from Málaga, at the end of the Costa del Sol commuter rail line. The most convenient option from the city is the C-1 commuter train line, which connects María Zambrano station with Fuengirola in just over 45 minutes, with frequent services throughout the day. The same train connects to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, some 25 km away, in around half an hour.

By car, you can get there via the A-7 motorway (toll-free and running alongside the coast) or the toll road AP-7; both take around 30 minutes from Málaga. The town has public car parks near the seafront promenade, although in high season it’s best to arrive early. There are also intercity buses connecting Fuengirola with Marbella and other parts of the Costa del Sol, and if you’d prefer to travel directly from the airport, you can book a private transfer.

You may also be interested in organising a private visit to Fuengirola.

Request a quote for private groups

Day Trips from Fuengirola

Thanks to its central location on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is a good base for day trips.
