It opens from 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00, and closes on Sundays. The castle is small and retains little original structure, so the visit is brief; the views over the Cádiz countryside make it worthwhile.

Is there flamenco in Vejer de la Frontera?

Yes, in the castle itself, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays. It is one of the village’s most distinctive experiences, staged in an Andalusi courtyard. If you can visit at the weekend, bear this in mind when planning.

What is Vejer’s Cobijada?

The traditional dress of Vejer’s women: a black garment covering the whole body, leaving only the right eye visible. At the viewpoint named after it, beside the castle, a sculpture depicts the costume and has become the village’s symbol.

What is the best restaurant in Vejer de la Frontera?

By ratings, El Jardín del Califa on Plaza de España, with 4.6 from over eight thousand reviews and Moroccan and Middle Eastern cuisine. Venta Pinto in La Barca de Vejer scores 4.5 from over seven thousand reviews, is more affordable and opens daily from 08:00 to 23:00. Casa Varo also scores 4.5, but closes Tuesdays.

Is Vegania restaurant in Vejer?

No. The restaurant of that name is in Madrid’s Carabanchel neighbourhood and is mistakenly recommended in several guides as a vegan restaurant in Vejer. For plant-based food locally, El Jardín del Califa offers plenty of Middle Eastern options, but ask about each dish because its menu does not clearly distinguish vegan from vegetarian.

Which beaches are near Vejer de la Frontera?

El Palmar and Caños de Meca, both around ten kilometres away, or fifteen minutes by car. El Palmar is an open sandy beach with steady waves, the area’s surfing beach. Caños de Meca is more sheltered, among pine woods beside Cape Trafalgar and its lighthouse on a sandy isthmus.

How long do you need to see Vejer?

One day is enough for the historic centre, entirely walkable: Plaza de España, the castle, Cobijada viewpoint, the church and the walls are all close together. With two days, add the beaches, windmills and a neighbouring village.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/what-to-see-in-vejer-de-la-frontera/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Cadiz","item":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/10-imprescindibles-what-to-visit-and-what-to-do-in-cadiz/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"name":"What to see in Vejer de la Frontera"}]},{"@type":["Castle","TouristAttraction"],"@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/what-to-see-in-vejer-de-la-frontera/#castillo","name":"Castle of Vejer de la Frontera","description":"A fortress of Andalusi origin, remodelled after the Christian conquest and declared a National Monument in 1931.
