Contrary to what you often read, summer is the windiest season, not the calmest. In spring and autumn, the levante alternates with the gentler, more humid poniente, so calm days are more likely.

Which beach should you visit in Tarifa when the levante blows?

Playa Chica, the small beach formed beside the Isla de las Palomas breakwater, is sheltered from the wind. Locals go there on levante days, when lying on Los Lances and Valdevaqueros is uncomfortable. Diving schools also hold introductory dives here because of the quality of the rocky seabed.

Can you visit Isla de las Palomas in Tarifa?

Only on a guided tour booked in advance through Tarifa’s tourist office, costing around four euros, as the interior is military land and belongs to the Ministry of the Interior. You do not go by boat: an artificial breakwater built in 1808 links it to the mainland, so you walk there. The isthmus is freely accessible, but has no parking.

What can I do in Tarifa in levante winds if I do not practise wind sports?

Visit Guzmán el Bueno Castle, whose walls shelter much of the route; explore the old town’s medieval streets, designed to provide shelter; walk along the Isla de las Palomas isthmus, spectacular in strong levante winds; eat almadraba bluefin tuna in the central taverns; and hike inland, avoiding cliff sections.

Why is Tarifa so windy?

Because of a funnel effect. Air from the Mediterranean meets the bottleneck formed by the Spanish and Moroccan coasts, compresses and accelerates, reaching Tarifa much stronger than it would over the open sea. It can continue for several days without a break.

Are whale-watching trips cancelled when the levante blows?

Trips usually operate in moderate levante winds, but strong winds cause cancellations because of sea conditions. Confirm your departure on the day before travelling to the port, rather than assuming it will run.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/what-to-do-at-tariff-with-levante-wind/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Tarifa","item":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/10-things-to-see-on-tariff/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"name":"What to do in Tarifa with an easterly wind"}]},{"@type":"ItemList","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/what-to-do-at-tariff-with-levante-wind/#planes","name":"What to do in Tarifa with an easterly wind","numberOfItems":9,"itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Playa Chica","description":"A small beach formed when the breakwater was built, sheltered from the easterly levante wind.
