The realistic breakdown:

Seville is the easy one: Alcázar, Atarazanas and Itálica are all within a day’s journey, and Osuna is an hour’s drive away via the A-92.

Córdoba, today: the historic centre and the Roman Bridge, plus Almodóvar, 25 km away.

Almería requires a separate journey: The Alcazaba is in the capital, but Mesa Roldán and Sorbas are spread out, so you’ll need a car and several days.

La Calahorra, by the way: It’s an hour and a half from Granada, heading towards Almería, so it makes sense to combine it with a trip to that province.

If you only have one day, the answer is Seville: it is home to four such sites, and the Alcázar is the most recognisable in the whole of Spain.

Excursions from Malaga

We are a local operator based in Málaga with over 50 years’ experience organising day trips around Andalusia. Seville and Córdoba – the two provinces with the most easily accessible destinations – can be visited on day trips from Málaga and the Costa del Sol:

To prepare for the visit, you need to Seville’s must-sees and What to see in Andalusia.

Frequently asked questions

Where was *Game of Thrones* filmed in Andalusia?

In three provinces. In Seville, the Real Alcázar was Dorne, the Reales Atarazanas were the crypts of the Red Keep, Italica was the Well of Dragons, and the Osuna bullring was the Daznak Pit in Meereen. In Córdoba, the Roman Bridge served as the Long Bridge of Volantis, whilst Almodóvar del Río Castle stood in for Highgarden and Casterly Rock. In Almería, the Mesa Roldán Tower and the Sorbas quarries stood in for Meereen, whilst the Alcazaba of Almería stood in for Dorne.

Where in Andalusia was *House of the Dragon* filmed?

At La Calahorra Castle, in the Guadix region, in the province of Granada. It stands in for Pentos Castle, one of the Free Cities, in episode 6 of the first series. Scenes featuring King Viserys’s walk with Laena Velaryon and a conversation between Laena and her daughter Rhaena were filmed there. Filming took place in October 2021.

Which Game of Thrones filming location is the best to visit?

Almodóvar del Río Castle, in Córdoba. It is open every day; admission costs 11 euros and there are signs and references to the film shoot scattered throughout the grounds, as well as dramatised guided tours. There is free parking at the bottom and an optional shuttle bus for 2 euros, which saves you from having to walk uphill. The Real Alcázar in Seville is the most famous, but it’s best to book in advance.

Can you visit La Calahorra Castle?

There are some restrictions. It is privately owned and visiting hours are very limited, with no regular opening times, so it is advisable to check whether it is open before setting off. It is situated in the Guadix region, an hour and a half from the city of Granada in the direction of Almería, so it makes sense to combine a visit with a trip to that province.

What was filmed at the Osuna bullring?

The Daznak Pit, the Meereen fighting pit, in series 5. It is one of the most expensive sequences in the series: the attack by the Sons of the Harpy on Daenerys and the moment when she flies for the first time on the back of Drogon. The Osuna Museum also has a room dedicated to the series, called «Ice and Fire», featuring costumes and props from the shoot.

How many locations did Almodóvar Castle stand in for?

Two. The fortress served as Highgarden, the seat of House Tyrell, and its dungeons as Casterly Rock, that of the Lannisters. Both appear in series 7, and it was there that Olenna Tyrell’s death was filmed; after drinking the poisoned wine, she confesses to Jaime Lannister that it was she who killed Joffrey at the Purple Wedding.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/game-of-thrones-scenarios-andalucia/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Game of Thrones Tour in Andalusia"}]},{"@type":"ItemList","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/game-of-thrones-scenarios-andalucia/#itemlist","name":"Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon filming locations in Andalusia","itemListOrder":"https://schema.org/ItemListOrderAscending","numberOfItems":9,"itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Royal Alcazar of Seville","description":"The Water Gardens of Dorne, Series 5","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Sevilla","addressRegion":"Sevilla","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Royal Shipyards of Seville","description":"The Crypts of the Red Keep, Seasons 7 and 8","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Sevilla","addressRegion":"Sevilla","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Archaeological Site of Italica","description":"The Well of Dragons, Seasons 7 and 8","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Santiponce","addressRegion":"Sevilla","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":4,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Osuna Bullring","description":"The Daznak Pit in Meereen, Series 5","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Osuna","addressRegion":"Sevilla","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":5,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Roman Bridge of Cordoba","description":"The Long Bridge of Volantis, Season 5","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Córdoba","addressRegion":"Córdoba","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":6,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Castle of Almodóvar del Río","description":"Highgarden and Casterly Rock, Series 7","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Almodóvar del Río","addressRegion":"Córdoba","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":7,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Mesa Roldán Tower","description":"Exterior shots of Meereen","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Carboneras","addressRegion":"Almería","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":8,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"Alcazaba of Almeria","description":"The Water Gardens of Dorne, Series 6","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Almería","addressRegion":"Almería","addressCountry":"ES"}}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":9,"item":{"@type":"TouristAttraction","name":"La Calahorra Castle","description":"Pentos Castle in *House of the Dragon*","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"La Calahorra","addressRegion":"Granada","addressCountry":"ES"}}}]},{"@type":"FAQPage","@id":"https://www.visitanddo.com/en/game-of-thrones-scenarios-andalucia/#faq","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"Where was *Game of Thrones* filmed in Andalusia?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"In three provinces.
