It has served as a market, a bullring and a venue for public events.

Today, the market remains on the ground floor and is surrounded by bars with terraces: it’s the best place to stop for a salmorejo and the flamenquín halfway through the tour. Its regular layout contrasts with the irregular layout of the Jewish Quarter.

12. Plaza del Potro

It takes its name from the fountain featuring a colt at its centre, and is mentioned in Don Quixote. It retains the old Posada del Potro, a medieval inn that has now been converted into a centre dedicated to flamenco.

In the same square are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Julio Romero de Torres Museum, dedicated to the painter from Córdoba. As they are right next to the Alcázar, the activities follow on from one another without the need to travel between venues.

14. The Almodóvar Gate

The best preserved at the gates of walled Córdoba, of Islamic origin and flanked by turrets. It marks one of the entrances to the Jewish quarter.

Running alongside it is a section of city wall featuring a pond and statues of Seneca and Averroes, two thinkers born in the city. It is one of the most pleasant walks in the old town.

15. It’s north of the city centre, near the Palacio de Viana, so they’re well connected.

How to get there and organise your visit

How to get there: The AVE high-speed train puts Córdoba less than an hour from Málaga and around 45 minutes from Seville. By car, take the A-45 from Málaga and the A-4 from Seville or Madrid. The train and coach stations are next to each other, about a 15-minute walk from the historic centre.

If you have a day, focus on the area around the Mosque: start there first thing in the morning — or at 8.30 am if you want to take advantage of the free entry slot —, then head to the Alcázar and its gardens, cross the Roman Bridge and spend the rest of the time exploring the Jewish Quarter, the two narrow streets and the Plaza del Potro.

If you’ve got a weekend, including Medina Azahara, the Palacio de Viana, the Royal Stables and the Cristo de los Faroles. These are the four must-see sights that no visitor should miss, and they are all within a short walking distance of one another. If you have more time, it’s worth adding Medina Azahara and the patios to your itinerary.

Is there free entry to the Mosque of Córdoba?

Yes, from Monday to Saturday, 8.30 am to 9.30 am, with individual entry and no groups or guides. However, there are three important restrictions: visitors must leave by 9.20, so the actual time allowed is less than an hour; access to the central area of the cathedral is not permitted, meaning you can only see around 60% of the site; and the scheme is suspended on days when special celebrations are held.

How much does it cost to visit the Mosque of Córdoba?

General admission costs €15 from April 2026, with a reduced rate of €12 for over-65s and students aged 15 to 26. Children aged 10 to 14 pay €8 and those under 10 go in free of charge. The «El Alma de Córdoba» night-time tour is charged separately and has limited places, so it is advisable to book in advance.

Is it possible to see Córdoba in a day?

Yes, focusing on the Mosque-Cathedral area: the Mosque first thing in the morning, the Alcázar and its gardens, the Roman Bridge, and the rest of the day spent exploring the Jewish Quarter, Calleja de las Flores, Calleja del Pañuelo and Plaza del Potro. What you won’t have time for in a single day is Medina Azahara, which is 8 kilometres away and requires a half-day of its own.

Who commissioned the construction of Medina Azahara?

From 936 onwards, in the middle of the 10th century, Caliph Abd al-Rahman III established it as the seat of power for the Caliphate of Córdoba. The palatine city was razed to the ground barely seventy years later and has been a World Heritage Site since 2018. It is situated about 8 kilometres from the city centre and can be reached by shuttle bus or by car.

When is the Córdoba Patios Festival?

In May, when local residents open their homes to the public and this tradition – designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – reaches its peak. Outside these dates, the patios can also be visited throughout the year, particularly in the neighbourhoods of San Basilio, next to the Alcázar, and Santa Marina, many of which offer free entry
